The Milky Way Galaxy – Our Cosmic Home
Look up at the night sky. Beyond the stars you can see with your eyes lies an enormous cosmic city known as the Milky Way Galaxy—the home of our Solar System.
The Milky Way is a magnificent barred spiral galaxy stretching nearly 100,000 to 120,000 light-years across. It contains an estimated 100 to 400 billion stars, countless planets, glowing nebulae, star clusters, and mysterious clouds of gas and dust.
Our Solar System is not located near the center of the galaxy. Instead, it resides about 26,000–27,000 light-years away from the galactic center, within a smaller spiral arm called the Orion Arm. This location provides a relatively calm and stable environment where life on Earth has been able to evolve.
At the very heart of the Milky Way lies a supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A*. It contains the mass of millions of Suns and exerts an enormous gravitational influence over the stars orbiting the galactic center.
Our Sun is constantly moving through space. Along with all the planets, it travels around the center of the Milky Way at an incredible speed of approximately 220 kilometers per second. Even at this tremendous speed, completing just one orbit around the galaxy takes about 225 to 250 million years. This journey is known as a Galactic Year.
To understand the scale of our galaxy, imagine this: if you could travel at the speed of light, it would still take around 100,000 years to cross the Milky Way from one side to the other.
